Technology Overview: VACUTECT Storage Tank Testing System

Tanknology's VACUTECT system is the most popular technology in the world for testing the integrity of both underground and above ground storage tank systems. This Canadian system is ULC listed as a precision leak test as well as having a third party EPA approval in the United States. VACUTECT determines the integrity of storage tank systems by monitoring for changes in pressure, sound or water level when a vacuum is created. The greatest advantage of VACUTECT is it's flexibility. This allows the technician to perform trouble shooting to determine not only if the system is leaking but the nature and location of the leak.

All openings to the tank are sealed off and a mild vacuum is applied by drawing air out of the vent using a vacuum pump. The vacuum level is constantly monitored and maintained by the computer in the testing unit. While under vacuum VACUTECT monitors for three things:

  1. The water level at the bottom of the tank is monitored to a resolution of .5 MM. An increase would indicate that water was being drawn in through a leak.
  2. The probe contains a hydrophone which listens for sounds. A bubbling sound indicates that air is being drawn in and bubbling up through the product. A whistling sound indicates air being drawn into the ullage space (empty top portion).
  3. The pressure in the tank is monitored to see if the tank is holding vacuum. A constant loss of vacuum indicates a leak.
